The Next Blue Plaque
On 24th July at 6.30 pm the Guest of Honour, The Dean of St Albans Cathedral, Jo Kelly Moore will officially install a Blue Plaque at 40 Holywell Hill, where Margaret Wix lived. The public is welcome to attend.
Why a plaque:
First woman Mayor of St Albans. First local woman Justice of the Peace. First woman elected to St Albans City Council. First woman Alderman. Awarded the Freedom of the City.
Importance to St Albans:
St Albans Council was not among the first in England to recognise and draw on female talent, but Margaret Wix recorded a number of notable achievements as a woman in early 20th century St Albans. She was the first local female Justice of the Peace and in 1919 was the first woman elected to St Albans City Council. After only five years on the Council she was unanimously elected the city’s first female Mayor in 1924. She went on to become the first female Alderman in 1936 and was awarded the Freedom of the City in 1943. After her mayoralty, 35 years would pass before the second woman Mayor was elected.
Tuesday the 23rd July at 7pm at:The Lower Red Lion, 36 Fishpool St AL3 4RX
