Today is the birthday of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (26 April 121 – 17 March 180 CE). Who was he and why should we remember him? We should remember him because he was the last in a line of five emperors known for their wisdom and just rule; he was a follower of Stoicism, a philosophy that emphasized reason, virtue, and living in harmony with nature; his writings, the ‘Meditations’, are still admired today because of their relevance to how humans should live their life. If you want to know more about him (and whether Ridley Scott portrayed him correctly in ‘Gladiator’) sign up for Tim Boatswain’s talk ‘Marcus Aurelius, a modern thinker?’ on 13th June at St Albans Cathedral: https://www.stalbanscathedral.org/Event/marcus-aurelius-a-modern-thinker
