What is Consciousness?




This is an introductory article to the next debate at Philosophy at the Lower Red Lion Pub.


Nothing is more intimate than consciousness. It is the inward light by which you experience the warmth of sunlight, the ache of nostalgia, or the vivid redness of a rose. It is the immediate, continuous reality of being alive. Yet, despite being the single certainty of human existence, consciousness remains the ultimate mystery of modern science and philosophy. How does a three‑pound lump of wet biological tissue give rise to the subjective taste of coffee or the feeling of joy? In contemporary metaphysics and cognitive science, this query is framed as the “Hard Problem”: a term popularised by philosopher David Chalmers to distinguish the mechanical functions of the brain, such as processing visual signals or storing memory, from the subjective experience of living through them. To unpack this profound enigma, thinkers have divided into several major philosophical paradigms, each offering a distinct map of reality.


One prominent view is physicalism, which holds that consciousness is brain activity and nothing more. According to this school, the mind is not a secret entity hiding inside the skull; it is simply what the brain does. Physicalists argue that just as chemistry fully explains the nature of water without invoking mysterious spiritual ingredients, neuroscience will eventually explain subjective feeling once our tools and models mature. The so‑called ghost in the machine, they contend, is an illusion born of incomplete science. At the opposite end of the spectrum lies dualism, historically championed by René Descartes as the idea that mind and body are two distinct substances, the soul and matter. While classical substance dualism is rare in modern science, property dualism remains a major contender today. It posits that although there is only one physical substance, complex physical systems like the brain can instantiate non‑physical properties, namely, subjective awareness, that cannot be reduced purely to physical equations.


A more radical alternative is panpsychism, which treats consciousness not as a late‑stage biological miracle but as a fundamental feature of the universe, akin to mass or charge. Panpsychists assert that rudimentary mind‑like properties exist everywhere, down to fundamental particles like electrons and quarks. A rock is not conscious in a unified, thinking sense, but its subatomic components possess infinitesimal seeds of experience. The brain does not generate consciousness out of nothing; rather, it organises and integrates these microscopic experiences into a coherent, macro‑level self‑awareness. Taking physicalism to its extreme, illusionism argues that inner experience, or qualia: for example, the felt redness of red does not actually exist as a distinct phenomenon. Instead, the brain creates a simplified, functional self‑model, a kind of user‑interface, that misleads us into thinking we possess an unquantifiable inner life. In short, consciousness is a trick the brain plays on itself to track its own complex data processing. Flipping physicalism on its head, idealism posits that mind is not created by matter; rather, matter is a manifestation within consciousness. Gaining renewed attention through modern analytic philosophy, idealism suggests that the physical universe is what conscious experience looks like when observed from an external, localised perspective.


While these theoretical debates continue to rage, empirical neuroscience has established concrete, undeniable baseline facts regarding how consciousness behaves in our physical world. Alter the physical state of the brain, via local anaesthesia, traumatic brain injury, psychoactive drugs, or targeted electrical stimulation, and you alter consciousness directly; human subjective awareness strictly requires a living, functioning neural architecture.

Awareness is not a binary light switch but operates on a continuous spectrum, ranging from deep coma and dreamless sleep to lucid alertness, intoxication, high‑focus flow states, and dreaming. Moreover, neuroscientists have confirmed that there is no single consciousness spot or anatomical seat of the soul. Instead, awareness emerges from dynamic, synchronised chatter across broad neural loops, with specific interactions between the deep thalamus and the cerebral cortex across the front and back of the brain.


In the end, consciousness is the subjective, first‑person experience of living. It is the most undeniable fact of your existence, yet its origin remains the hardest problem in human thought. Whether neuroscience eventually proves that experience is merely complex computation, or philosophy convinces us that the cosmos itself is sentient, consciousness stands as the last great frontier: the universe looking back at itself, trying to understand how it came to see.
