Born Sinful? A Dramatised Debate

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

Back in 2021 it was reported that ‘Britain’s strictest head teacher "has bolstered her reputation by saying that children are born with ‘original sin’ and must be ‘habituated into choosing good over evil." Was she right? Certainly, Augustine, a Bishop from North Africa, would have agreed with her. In the third century CE, he challenged the British theologian Pelagius (from St Albans?), who rejected the idea of original sin and believed that humans are born morally neutral, with the ability to choose between good and evil. Augustine won the argument and the Catholic Church adopted the doctrine of 'original sin' but would he win today?

Travel back in time and join the debate as this pair battle it out on the modern stage.
