Blue Plaques St Albans & Conservation 50

Updated: Mar 22, 2023

Last Friday BPSA & C50 held a social gathering to thank donors and supporters (see attached photos) - also a special thanks to Catherine Morris, Christopher Place, for allowing us to use one of the shops.

Afterward, Cllr Annie Brewster sent me this link to a brilliant 1920s film of St Albans:

Time has tweaked rather than ravaged the historic city of St Albans in the decades since this film was shot. A fantastic phantom ride into the market place reveals a familiar yet subtly different landscape - even the ubiquitous coffee shops of today have an analogue in the St Albans Workman's Coffee Tavern. The Cathedral, Clock Tower and roman ruins punctuate the bustling street scenes.

Then Now

In the film near the end, a slightly blurred shot of the Christopher Inn Succubus is shown (though without an explanation). As you can see from the screenshot she was in a much better condition 100 years ago and not painted white. Whilst she has been allowed to deteriorate and parts of the wood lost, let us hope we can conserve what remains in the New Year!
