Many thanks to those of you (25 in number) who were able to join the discussion last night at the Lower Red Lion
Of course, like all philosophical questions, we came to no definitive answer about What is Happiness?. We explored the nature of this complex and multifaceted concept, 'happiness'. We recognised the subjective and objective elements of how happiness can be found through joy, virtue, pleasure, freedom, or well-being. Inevitably, as a human emotion, happiness remains a deeply personal and complicated aspiration. Our thoughts ranged from the teachings of Socrates to the modern insights of positive psychology. I think I can safely say we agreed that the pursuit of happiness has shaped human thought and continues to inspire individuals to find meaning, fulfilment, and joy in their lives.
In terms of what makes us happy, we can argue that, while philosophers have offered valuable insights, the pursuit of happiness is personal and unique for each individual. I hope I can record that there was general agreement that by cultivating positive emotions, maintaining healthy relationships, and nurturing a sense of purpose, we can enhance our overall well-being and live more fulfilling lives!
The next meeting of Philosophy in LRL is due around May and I will negotiate with David (if he is still willing) a date. I suggest the topic will be What is Truth? , which seems apposite given the state of society.
